Gardeners Falconwood is committed to providing professional gardening services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, subcontractors, clients and members of the public. This policy sets out how we manage health and safety during all gardening, maintenance and related outdoor work undertaken by our team.

Policy Objectives

Our primary aim is to prevent accidents, injuries, ill health and damage to property or the environment. We do this by identifying hazards, assessing risks, putting sensible controls in place and continually improving our standards. Every member of Gardeners Falconwood is expected to take personal responsibility for working safely and cooperating with this policy.

Management Responsibilities

The management of Gardeners Falconwood has overall responsibility for implementing and reviewing this health and safety policy. Management will provide appropriate resources, guidance and supervision so that work can be carried out safely and efficiently. This includes maintaining safe systems of work, ensuring equipment is suitable and maintained, and complying with relevant health and safety legislation and best practice for gardening and grounds maintenance.

Managers will regularly review our working methods, accident records and near-miss reports to identify trends and improvements. Where necessary, work practices will be updated and additional controls introduced to reduce risk.

Employee Responsibilities

Every gardener, operative and subcontractor working on behalf of Gardeners Falconwood has a duty of care to themselves, their colleagues, clients and the public. All staff must:

Use equipment, tools and machinery in accordance with training and instructions; wear the required personal protective equipment for the task; report hazards, defects, accidents and near-misses promptly; follow safe systems of work and onsite safety rules; avoid taking shortcuts that could compromise safety; and show consideration to clients, neighbours and passers-by at all times.

Anyone who is unsure how to operate a tool or carry out a task safely must stop work and seek guidance before proceeding.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Gardeners Falconwood conducts risk assessments for typical gardening activities such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, pruning, planting, clearance work, waste handling and the use of machinery and chemicals. Site-specific assessments are carried out where conditions require it, such as steep slopes, restricted access or proximity to roads and public footpaths.

These assessments inform safe working procedures, including the positioning and use of machinery, safe lifting and manual handling techniques, working at height controls, and how we protect others who may be affected by our work.

Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment

All tools and equipment used by Gardeners Falconwood must be maintained in good working order. Regular inspections are carried out to ensure that guards, safety switches and other protective features are intact and functioning correctly. Defective equipment is taken out of service until it is repaired or replaced.

Only trained and competent personnel may operate powered machinery such as lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, blowers and cutting equipment. Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
